Cashing in on Looking Good

Jane Seymour, who turns 63 next month, has launched everything from her own jewelry range to numerous self-help booksHer jawline is tight, her tummy as flat as a teenager’s and her arms as lithe as a supermodel’s.

This is actress Jane Seymour, who turns 63 next month. On holiday in Hawaii to see in the New Year, she looks ecstatic. And no wonder. For the girl from suburban Hillingdon is still every inch a Hollywood siren.

After four children, three grandchildren and four marriages, Jane says she’s in better shape than she was 40 years ago (right). Indeed, she looks remarkably as she did when she starred as a Bond girl in the 1973 movie Live And Let Die opposite Roger Moore.
So how on earth does she still look so youthful?

The short answer is a taxing regime of fitness and beauty maintenance, which must take up quite a chunk of each day. But her devotion to looking good has proved very bankable, too: Jane has launched everything from her own jewellery range, a clothes line and numerous self-help books on the back of her appearance.
She also promotes everything from perfume to pistachios. Today, Jane, who is separated from her fourth husband, is worth a staggering £45 million (Dh270 million) — very nearly as much as her old co-star Roger Moore, whose on-screen career was rather greater than hers.

Here, we reveal the secrets of Jane’s extraordinary body, which includes a strict diet that forbids consuming any more than four Maltesers in one sitting — but allows you to indulge in glasses of sweet, chilled white wine...

Rear that looks chipper
Nearly 30 years of devoted Pilates practice have shaped and sculpted Jane’s tiny rear. She started the exercise classes in Beverly Hills in 1976 with fellow actresses Joan Collins, Natalie Wood and Charlie’s Angels star Jaclyn Smith.
Today, she uses a gyrotonics machine as part of her Pilates workout. The machines, also beloved of Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, look rather like a medieval rack and feature pulleys and straps to tone and stretch. As well as Pilates, Jane is a golf fanatic, and is known on the celebrity circuit as a good chipper and putter.
She turns her back on yoga
The actress has a history of back problems, and a decade ago suffered a herniated disc, which required surgery. She won’t cycle, use a step machine or do intense yoga for fear of throwing her back out again, but does do careful exercise in the gym three times a week for strengthening. “My approach is cautious,” she said. “I have a hot shower before I exercise. I get on the treadmill for ten minutes to half an hour, and I also do light weights very carefully.”
Breast enlargement
Jane has admitted to having a breast enlargement operation in 2005, in advance of her nude scene with Owen Wilson in comedy film The Wedding Crashers. It was her first ever topless scene, and she said that, after having and breastfeeding twins Johnny and Kris in 1995, her figure wasn’t up to such exposure. However, she said the implants were small by Hollywood standards, where bigger is seen as better. “My plastic surgeon had to special-order them,” she said.
Eyes that mesmerise
With one brown eye and one green, Jane often has to wear a contact lens for acting roles. She admits to having had surgery on her upper and lower eyelids. “Top and bottom, years ago. I was asked by photographers if I’d consider getting them done because they spent so much time touching up pictures,” she said. “It wasn’t a big deal — I went out for lunch the day after surgery.” Such surgery is performed on upper and lower lids to remove eyebags and tighten as an anti-ageing measure. Jane is a big fan of mascara and uses Revlon 3D volume mascara. On special occasions, she uses individually applied false eyelashes, and she favours Chanel eyeshadow Les 4 Ombres.
Botox? never again
Jane has long resisted a full facelift, saying she’s yet to see one that looks natural.Nor is she a devotee of Botox, after one dabble with the needle left her with a face that was rather more immobile than she would have liked. Jane hated the treatment, and says that — as an actress — she needs to be able to move her face. “I’m proud of my wrinkles,” she said. “They give my face character. As an actress, you mess with that at your peril.” However, Jane makes millions from her association with the Natural Advantage skincare range, which she formulated with a dermatologist and has sold in the US for the past six years for around £20 a pot. Her moisturisers contain Retinol, which fights wrinkles. When it comes to make-up, Jane favours Prescriptives foundation, which has light coverage and can be custom-ordered to suit your skin tone, at a cost of £40. She also favours Chanel lipstick in peachy colours such as Coco La Pausa 08 (pictured, GBP22.50). She uses lipliner to even out her lips, which are ‘quite asymmetrical’.
Hair that’s never cropped
The curtain of hair that falls halfway down her back has long been Jane’s trademark. “People say women shouldn’t have long hair over a certain age, but I’ve never done what everyone says,” she remarks. For more than a decade, she has visited Malibu-based hairdresser Marie Ferro for her hair treatments and colour. Marie says that she sees Jane every three weeks, which is a considerable commitment. Ferro is something of an institution in California, and was stylist of choice for the late Farah Fawcett. Her prices are said to be very firmly in the ultra-high-end bracket. As part of Jane’s rejuvenating hair treatments, Marie uses a gel under a heated cap to remove any product build-up. She then uses a red, blonde and medium golden-brown colour. Protein-enriched conditioner is then used on the ends, before a “revitalising” treatment to prevent oxidation, which can leave hair dull after colouring. All in all, it’s a regime that means Jane has never had to resort to a substantial chop.
Pins fit for strictly
As a child, Jane dreamed of becoming a ballerina. As a result, her legs have always been spectacular. She took up ballet aged five, but by the time she was 16, the cartilage in both knees was so badly damaged that she had to quit and so she became an actress instead. Her legs were further honed when she took part in Dancing With The Stars, the US version of Strictly Come Dancing, in 2010, and she was placed a very respectable sixth.
Her one secret vice
Jane credits isometric exercises for her enviably flat stomach. These are exercises that involve working the muscle without actually moving, often by using resistance against an object or the floor. One example of an isometric exercise is the ‘plank’ pose, where you hold your body off the ground by leaning on the palms of your hands and the tips of your toes. Jane told an interviewer: “With isometrics, you’re isolating and engaging the stomach muscles to strengthen them. It has given me really strong stomach muscles, and I have a longer, leaner look than before.”

Naturally, Jane doesn’t eat any junk food. She said last year that she considered four Maltesers to be a binge. The 5ft 4in actress weighs just 8st 6lb. “I love berries and other antioxidant-rich foods,” she told an interviewer. “We always have fresh fruit and vegetables grown without pesticides. I rarely eat red meat; it’s usually chicken or fish with lots of veggies.” However, Jane doesn’t live like a saint all the time. Carbs and other treats aren’t banned in the Seymour household, as she admitted this week — she just exercises iron-willed portion control. “If I have pasta, I’ll just eat half of it,’ she said. The one area in which she allows herself to indulge is wine. Her mother was a sommelier, and Jane once revealed that she favours Californian wines. However, the sweet French white wine Chateau D’Yquem, is her favourite tipple.
