I agree, Evy. I'd like to learn simple, common phrases, that I might need to use if I ever visited France.

Yes, simple but IMPORTANT phrases...like where I can find coffee!!! Laughing Very Happy

All kidding aside, I would like to learn the basic phrases first as well. Like how to call a taxi, how to ask directions, how much something costs, what someone's name is, etc.

Btw....I posted the same sentences (in german) that Cécile shared here with explanations for pronunciation in the german thread 'Auf Deutsch bitte'. So if anyone would like to learn some, don't hesitate to check that thread as well. We don't ONLY talk german in that thread. Wink

Hi Ladies, I'd have wanted to post vocabulary today but an unforesseen professionnal movement yesterday did not allow me the time to prepare it.
I'm sorry. I prepare it for monday.

So sorry to hear about the terrible storms, Cécile! I hope no one was hurt and the clean-up process goes smoothly.

Please don't fret about posting the next lesson - we're in no particular hurry and will be here whenever things settle down for you ((HUGS)).

I hope things will soon be better for you, Cécile. I've seen in the news what consequences the bad storm had for France and Spain. Don't worry at all.

Thanks Ladies, you are a sunbeam because here it continues to rain a lot what does not arrange the works of clearing and floods begin to occur.
Geneviève relieves for the next lesson.

For this morning, if you allow, I shall begin by the " a, b, c," not to "sing" it, but to know how the letters are said in the words:
-the easiest of all: h
it is as if it was not!!! no sound, no breath!
- the consonants, except c, g, j, q.
they sound absolutely as in English...
Until that, it is very easy, isn't it?
Now, the difficulties.
The letters c and g have two pronunciations
if with a "a" "u" "o"
we say ca=ka ga=ga
co=ko go=go
cu=ku gu=gu
if with "e "i"
we say ce=se ge=je ( but I am to specify about this letter)
ci=si gi=ji
About the letter "j"
In English we say "dj" example " Jane " . The tongue in the mouth touches and slams against the palate. In French the tongue stay in the mouth without strengh... it is said the sound is "palatalized!!!
For the "q" it is easier... only "k". A sound hard.
The consonants are easier than the vowels.
"a" sounds as in "banana"
"e" sounds as in " April" ( about!!!)
"i" sounds as "ee"
"o" sounds "o"!!!
"u" sounds ..... I don't find any word for that!!! You have to put your lips as if you wanted to whistle and you let the breath going out... "uuuuu"
If you allow, it is all for now. Later, I shall give you some simple words. Please, I would like you ask me the sentences you need to know, as.... Where can I find coffee?
Où puis-je avoir du café? [u pu i je a voir du ca fé]
Geneviève

Oh, friends, I'm absolutely wrong in my indications to pronunce the sentence " où puis-je avoir du café"
remember the "u" is without example in E. and the "j" idem.
so...
it is for you
[oo] pu [ee] je [a] ( as in banana) voir du [ka]( always as in banana) [fa] as you pronunce the "a" in the beginning of the "abc"
