As women, we are like waves. We roll and we wave and we crash. But even as we crash, we are regrouping and learning how to pull ourselves together again. This knowledge is what keeps me young—the ability to deal with the blows. The older you get, the more you'll have and the more you'll lose. It's a change but it doesn't have to be a change for the worse.
I wrote a book on change. I talked with kids on drugs, people who lost their jobs, and women who survived breast cancer. Most of the people I meet in my life who radiate beauty have been through something tragic. My mom is 91 and has no money to speak of. She has been through hell and is grateful to be alive. The doctor gave her a bad diagnosis. She said thanks, but I'm absolutely magnificent. She's trying to help other people. She doesn't moan and groan about what's happening. As June Carter Cash used to say sometimes you just have to hunker down, squat, and press on.
What are some tricks for looking your best?
To try and move around as much as you can. I play golf, exercise as much as I can, and walk down the beach with the kids. I'm constantly on the move, not a sedentary person. I've had a disketemy. So I have to be careful about what I do. I do certain exercises for core stability, like Pilates, squats and stomach work. It's important to do these exercises accurately and they keep me pretty tight and slim. I work across the street from a rehab place and when I'm training I do it with a physiotherapist to target specific areas of my body.
It's important to not just run out and think you can do everything. You have to take it slowly and listen to your body. Stretching is really important and you should try to learn the accurate techniques. If you do the wrong technique, you will only hurt yourself more.
When it comes to eating, I'm pretty healthy. I love red fruits and berries, pistachios, fish, chicken, and veggies. If I'm on the run, I'll grab a handful of pistachios, raspberries and water. I grow argulla organically at home and I try to eat plenty of fresh food with vitamins. I'll use supplements from time to time, but there's nothing better than quality food where you can get vitamins naturally.
